The common theme of my research interests is the extraction of accurate quantitative information from measured biological and physical signals with the goal of advancing human health, safety, and welfare. My primary emphasis is on quantitative medical imaging, particularly single- and multiple-energy computed tomography (CT) and positron-emission tomography (PET). Accurate physical models of the underlying process and scanning system lead to accurate mathematical models, which in turn are used in the formulation of optimal algorithms from estimation theory for determining the measured quantity of interest. We are applying this methodology to more accurately characterize tissue, with the aim of improving radiation treatment plans.
