We study diseases of the cornea. These include herpetic stromal keratitis, a condition primarily associated with infection by herpes simplex virus I. We characterize the cells and factors associated with recurrent disease, which is the main cause of corneal damage. We are testing both targeted therapies as well as vaccines to reduce corneal disease. We also study corneal transplantation. We are characterizing the cells and factors associated with both steroid-resistant corneal rejection and late-term rejection. We are currently testing means of preventing these forms of rejection.
