My interests are in the surgical treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus, including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign disorders. I have a specific interest in treating peritoneal surface disease (carcinomatosis) arising from cancers of the appendix and large intestine. These patients are treated on an IRB-approved trial of delayed intraperitoneal chemotherapy after surgical cytoreduction, and we are anticipating enrolling in a multicenter randomized trial examining the same in the near future. I’m also concerned with optimizing patient safety and improving the design of our medical system through the application of procedural checklists and redundant systems. Along these lines, utilization of national clinical or administrative databases is becoming increasingly important and commonplace.
