Our lab does neuroscience research focused on a lysosomal protein called progranulin. While progranulin’s precise molecular function is currently unclear, mutations that result in reduced progranulin levels cause frontotemporal dementia. The lab’s major areas of focus are: 1) studying progranulin’s function through cellular and molecular biology approaches, and 2) testing therapeutic strategies for increasing progranulin levels in cells and in progranulin mutant mice (including mice that harbor the most common patient mutation, R493X).
