As a pediatric critical care physician, my overall career objective is to become an expert in the study of neurologic outcomes following critical illness. I am specifically interested in understanding how the care we provide in the intensive care unit influences the neurologic outcomes after ICU discharge. I am particularly focused on the care of children requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for refractory cardiac or respiratory failure, as well as, the influence of the ICU environment, sedation, sleep disruption, and delirium on the outcome of the broader critically ill pediatric population. Through clinical research, I aim to identify modifiable risk factors for neurologic injury during pediatric critical illness to minimize long-term cognitive and functional disability.
