Dr. Lustman’s research focuses on the interaction of psychiatric and medical illness. His studies have established the importance of depression in diabetes—not only are the odds of depression doubled in diabetes, depression is also associated with hyperglycemia and an increased risk for diabetic complications. In addition, he has conducted numerous clinical trials on the safety and efficacy of antidepressant treatment in patients diabetes which clarify the relationship of antidepressant treatment to medical outcome in this group.
