How to cite the ICTS in your publication

Use of any ICTS Core or service requires the following NIH Funding Acknowledgement for all publications and projects.

Publication Requirements

Applicable clinical trials must be registered at ClinicalTrials.gov.  Any publication resulting from research funded by the NIH must have a PMCID.

How to obtain a PubMed Central Identification (PMCID) number

In 2008, the National Institutes of Health instituted the NIH Public Access Policy, requiring all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication. The NIH Public Access Policy implements Division G, Title II, Section 218 of PL 110-161 (Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008) and is a federal requirement. It is a Term and Condition of Award for all grants and cooperative agreements active in Fiscal Year 2008 (October 1, 2007- September 30, 2008) or subsequent fiscal years, and for all contracts awarded after April 7, 2008.

There are four options for compliance based on submission methods specified by each journal or publisher. Each Method is described below. Visit the WU Becker Medical Library for more information.

Method A: "Journal deposits final published articles in PubMed Central without author involvement." Here is a list of those participating journals. With this option, if the ICTS grant (or any NIH grant) is cited, the journal will handle the PMC submission process automatically. If you notice that your publication does not have a PMCID within three months post-publication, contact the journal or publisher representative with whom you had worked. A PMCID is required within three months post-publication.

Method B: "Author asks publisher to deposit specific final published article in PudMed Central (usually for a fee)." Here is a list of those participating journals. During the publication submission process, be sure to request that your article is submitted to PubMed Central.

Method C: "Author self-submits or requests a third party submission of the final, peer-reviewed manuscript version of the publication to PubMed Central via the NIH Manuscript Submission system (NIHMS).” The Becker Medical Library offers WU investigators third party submitter services at no charge. Method D: "Author completes submission of final peer-reviewed manuscript deposited by publisher in the NIHMS."  When the publisher initiates this process (by uploading the final peer-reviewed manuscript), the author will receive an email to approve the uploaded version (via NIHMS). If you notice that your publication does not have a PMCID within three months post-publication, contact the journal or publisher representative with whom you had worked.
