William Powderly, MD, is the J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Sciences, and Director of the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences at Washington University. He served as co-chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases from 2013 to June 2025, and as the Larry J. Shapiro Director of the Institute for Public Health from 2013 to January 2026. From 2005-2012 he was Dean of Medicine and Head of the School of Medicine at University College Dublin in Ireland. Dr. Powderly has been actively involved in HIV-related clinical research for over thirty-five years with specific interests in opportunistic infections, metabolic complications and long-term outcomes of antiretroviral therapy. He is an author on over 500 original manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters. In 2021, he was asked by NCATS to lead ACTIV-1, a multi-centered trial of immunotherapy for severe COVID-19 infection. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians In Ireland, the Royal College of Physicians (London) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was, in 2017, President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
