The Center for Dissemination & Implementation Seminar Series brings leaders in the field of public health to campus throughout the academic year to offer talks on a variety of relevant topics. Join us on March 3rd for How do Patients React when we De-implement a Low-value Practice? Mixed-methods findings from a provider-randomized QI project to reduce inappropriate inhaled corticosteroids for patients with COPD with Christian Helfrich.
One of the concerns with de-implementing low-value health care practices is how patients will respond. They might perceive de-implementation as rationing motivated by cost. There is research exploring patient attitudes but it has almost exclusively been focus groups asking about attitudes toward medical overuse in general terms, or posing hypothetical cases. But little research has assessed how patients respond when their provider proposes de-implementing a specific medication. Dr. Helfrich will share findings from both patient and provider perspectives from a multi-site QI project to de-implement low-value inhaled corticosterioid prescriptions for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We’ll also discuss what aspects of these findings may or may not be generalized and how.
This event is free and open to all. No registration is necessary. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch.
