Informatics Core Services (ICS) offer software tools to facilitate biomedical research. These tools allow investigators to store, integrate, query, analyze, and visualize complex clinical and molecular data sets. ICS provides comprehensive training resources and facilitates collaborative studies for the identification of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and the subsequent development of personalized therapies.

ICS focuses on Biomedical Institute of Informatics (I2) as an academic discipline and as a facilitator of a broad range of research projects and their application to evidence-based changes in the treatment and management of patients.

Services & Resources

Consultation
Initial consultations, training sessions, and basic use of applications are fully subsidized for ICTS members.

Services
ICS offers a large variety of advanced technologies and services for working with biomedical data. ICS provides services and tools to WU researchers and their collaborators across the world, with priority given to WU ICTS and Siteman Cancer Center members. ICS services are also available to for-profit organizations on a charge-back basis.

Acquiring & Mining EHR Data
We can help qualified Washington University (WU)/BJC researchers obtain data from electronic healthcare records at BJC hospitals and Washington University School of Medicine, including over 6 million records of routine patient care (inpatient and some outpatient), for use in research or Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement projects. WU/BJC researchers can:

  • Access secure data repositories such as CIDER to obtain patient cohort counts or to query discrete data
  • Utilize the services of data brokers to obtain needed data.
  • Get assistance with certain analyses of data, e.g., text extraction from medical documents using an algorithm in Python or R,
  • Access data visualization services in the form of complex charts and dashboards for biomedical data.

Biospecimen Management
We offer consultation and training on use of several biospecimen management systems, including OpenSpecimen and WU Biospecimen Navigator.  ICS also assists in migrating legacy biospecimen data and setting up prospective biospecimen collection protocols.

Clinical Study Data Management
ICS operates and maintains two web-based applications supporting collection and management of clinical study and participant registry data, 1) ClinPortal and 2) REDCap.  Consultation, training and support are available on clinical study data capture and modeling using these tools.

Custom Projects
If you don’t see a suitable service above, but think that your project may benefit from ICS services, please reach out to our support team with your request. Many of our software products were stared as custom solutions for research or clinical projects.

Facilities & Other Resources

Informatics Core Services (ICS) within the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS) is led by a group of active and experienced bioinformatics experts and integrates elements of Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Sciences. It offers industry-standard, enterprise-class infrastructure and software tools to store, integrate, query, analyze, and visualize complex clinical and molecular data sets. CBMI provides essential data management/analysis and collaborative tools and comprehensive training resources to promote collaborative studies and facilitate the identification of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and the subsequent development of personalized therapies.

Facilities and Equipment: A dedicated, fault tolerant and fully redundant 10Gbps SAN supports a wide array of programs for data management, backend storage, advanced statistical/graphical analysis, and both relational and NoSQL databases. In addition, approximately 350 servers are utilized to manage and share diverse data sets and to provide high throughput computational resources to end-users. The ICS also contains a High Performance Computing Cluster for massively parallel data processing, a large clustered storage file system, and several High Availability Cloud systems to maintain maximum uptime for resources.
