I investigate the effects of exercise on healthy and pathological aging (i.e., Alzheimer disease), as well as determinants that contribute to engagement in physical activity, with a particular focus on affective and motivational contributions to regular, sustained exercise. I conduct basic and translational research that provides information about mechanisms of exercise and health behavior that can later be incorporated into interventions designed to improve the health of older adults. I utilize an interdisciplinary approach by combining behavioral and neuroscientific methods that bridge the gap between experimental in-lab work and research done in naturalistic and daily life settings. I aim to engage in a programmatic line of research that will facilitate tailoring recommendations and designing digital health interventions for older adults and individuals at risk for developing AD to increase engagement in sustained, regular physical activity.
