Dr. Malmstrom completed his doctorate in experimental psychology at Saint Louis University. He joined the faculty of the Department Psychiatry in 2004 and is currently a (tenure-track) assistant professor in the Department of Neurology & Psychiatry, Division of Psychiatry. Research interests include frailty, disability, health disparities, pain, cognitive function, and assessment in older adults. Dr. Malmstrom’s primary area of research focuses on issues related to mortality and to frailty and disability among middle-aged and older African Americans including, physical performance, lower body functional limitations, quality of life, cognitive function, and disease. Dr. Malmstrom’s research also focuses on investigating the efficacy of treatments for balance problems and low back in older adults and the assessment of pain in older adults with advanced dementia.
