Mahmoud

Congratulations to PROUD-MED Scholar Zainab Mahmoud, MD, MSc (Internal Medicine, Cardiology) on the funding of her K23 “Improving Maternal Cardiovascular Outcomes Through the Implementation of a Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy Bundle in Nigeria”, 1K23HL173684-01.

The award, funded through the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, seeks to mitigate postpartum blood pressure in Nigeria–which “has the highest burden of maternal mortality globally with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) contributing significantly to these deaths, as well as posing long-term risks for adverse cardiovascular health.” Through this five year career development award, Dr. Mahmoud will be on the path to achieving her goal of becoming an independent physician-scientist with expertise in global cardio-obstetrics. She attributes some success in writing the grant to resources from PROUD-MED.

Dr. Mahmoud also received the Dr. Nanette K. Wenger Research Goes Red Award from the American Heart Association. The award recognizes what is deemed the top research article focusing on cardiovascular disease and stroke in women that is published in an American Heart Association journal. Mahmoud’s study titled “Racial Disparities in Specific Maternal Cardiovascular Outcomes” identifies rates of hospitalization for cardiovascular reasons within a year after child delivery and analyzes these rates in terms of race and ethnicity.

Congratulations to Dr. Zainab Mahmoud and best wishes for continued success!
